Stridhan and dividing property

Stridhan is the property a woman receives as her own: gifts at marriage, jewellery, and anything given to her by family or others with the intent that it is hers. It remains her separate property, and she is entitled to its return. This is distinct from a division of jointly held or matrimonial assets.

India does not have a single community-property rule that splits everything in half. What each spouse owns, what was bought jointly, and what was contributed all matter. In a settlement, the two of you decide how to divide the home, savings, vehicles, and other assets, and a court can make that agreement enforceable.

Documenting who owns what, and keeping proof for stridhan, prevents most disputes. This is general information on how the law treats property, not advice on your specific assets, which an advocate can review.

This is the general rule. Yours may be different.
